Having sold their successful IT business in London, Brian and Marion Smith searched wine regions to realise their dream to make outstanding, small quantity wines, eventually settling on the unique terroir of the Elgin Valley in South Africa. Certified organic and using many biodynamic practices, ploughing is done by Maddox, a gentle Percheron horse, and pest control is handled by ducks patrolling the vineyards.
Elgin Ridge Chaos White 50cl 2018
13% abv
Vol- 50cl
Sauvignon Blanc (55%) / Semillon (45%) Certified Biodynamic by Demeter
Lemon/straw hues in the glass. Aromas of satsuma peel, elderflower sweetness and dry hay around the edges. This develops into upfront blackcurrant with a green tea undertone. The palate has a gloriously pithy edge, yet coated with an oily, multi-layered and textured mouthfeel with pleasant zing. Don’t be too rushed in finishing this bottle. The flavours will continue to change over time, once opened.
A blend of multiple lots of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon – some with skin contact, some oaked, some in stainless steel – and from this chaos comes this multi-layered gem.
