Having sold their successful IT business in London, Brian and Marion Smith searched wine regions to realise their dream to make outstanding, small quantity wines, eventually settling on the unique terroir of the Elgin Valley in South Africa. Certified organic and using many biodynamic practices, ploughing is done by Maddox, a gentle Percheron horse, and pest control is handled by ducks patrolling the vineyards.
Elgin Ridge 282 Chardonnay 2017
13% abv
“The 2017 “282″ Chardonnay saw 20% skin fermentation and aging in 30% new oak for 11 months. It has a refined bouquet of citrus fruit, freshly sliced pear and light stony aromas that veer toward Burgundy. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, featuring dried orange peel and a touch of white peach. I love the texture of this Chardonnay, and the finely tuned finish with a touch of ginger right on the aftertaste. Excellent.”
92 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Organic and biodynamic, this wine is full of grapefruit bonbon concentration, citrus pastilles, lime peel and a toffee apple kiss. Vibrant and intense with incredible piercing length. A really very special wine – one for white Burgundy lovers”
94 Points, Greg Sherwood MW, Decanter
This Chardonnay starts off with fresh and linear lime tension and opens up to sweet satsuma and candied citrus. The pithy texture keeps the sweet citrus fruits tightly knit at first. With more oxygen entering the wine in your glass, the pithy texture opens up to a velvet-like mouthfeel and leaves you with a wine that will continue to change in aroma expression as time passes
