The Mestre family is among the oldest in Châteauneuf du Pape. Its members have been working the vines there for several lineages and have passed the vineyard on from generation to generation. Monique and Jean Claude MESTRE created their own farm with part of the vines from the place called the Coteau de l'Ange in the 1960s and took over the family brand. Arrived in 1988, their daughter Corinne and her husband Yannick GASPARRI now manage the Domaine de la Côte de l'Ange, accompanied since the 2017 harvest by their son Jules. Together they respectfully perpetuate this centuries-old winemaking tradition.
Domaine de la Cote de l’Ange Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2020
15% abv
Wonderfully textbook Chateauneuf de Pape. Plenty of rich dark fruit, fresh cedar wood and a rich chocolatey finish that will go beautifully meaty with age.
The wine comprises, 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre. The grapes come from numerous plots on clay-limestone soil with rolled or sandy pebbles, with an average age of 40 years over a total area of 11 hectares. The Syrah largely comes from old gobelet trained vines. All of the grapes are handpicked and then a further hand sorting takes place at the winery to ensure only the best fruit goes into the Chateauneuf du Pape. The grapes then spend between 3 to 4 weeks on skins, depending on the variety before being blended. The wine then undergoes ageing in oak. 50% of the wine spends a year in oak, the rest in stainless steel before blending and bottling.
