Castellari del Giglio is a wine making project of Manfred Ing, cellar master at the Querciabella estate on Giglio, the tiny granite island carved by the wind and adorned by Mediterranean bushes off the southern Tuscan coast. Love of this land opened the door to rediscover abandoned vineyards with their ancient terraced walls still standing strong. The plan was simple: produce fine wine from grapes grown on different terraces to express the incredible complexities and uniqueness of each single vineyard. As a designated National Park the island will never see any new vineyard creation making the work to rescue and work these historic sites even more important.
Castellari del Giglio Calzo della Vignia 2016
12% abv
On the nose, the unique complexities of white flowers gently evolve into peaches, tropical mangoes and pineapples. This heady scent evokes memories of French Sauternes or a Canadian Ice wine. On the palate this wine shows great elegance with the fruit power beautifully accompanied by purity and minerality truly expressing the characteristics of its terroir. This wine pairs perfectly with light appetizers and white meat or is a great companion with seafood dishes. A wonderful wine for meditation.
Calzo della Vignia originates in the Castellari and Finocchio vineyards on the beautiful Tuscan island caressed by the sea breeze and characterized by loose granite soils. The wine respects traditional winemaking ways of Giglio and is made from 100% Ansonica (Insolia) grapes handpicked from two ancient vineyards in September. Back in the cellar, once destemmed, the Ansonica ferments naturally on its skins for up to three months. The wine is then pressed off to old French oak barrels where maturation continues.
