Bonavita Faro 2017

14% abv

Vol- 75cl

“Here’s a wine that I highly recommend you seek before these 7,000 bottles are gone. The Bonavita 2017 Faro shows a very fun and vibrant bouquet with all kinds of small detailing and embroidery. Wild forest berry is interwoven with grilled rosemary, dried rose, licorice root and a savory touch of camphor ash or balsamic herb. In fact, those herbal and floral aromas appear with more intensity against a neutral background of dark plummy fruit. The blend is 60% Nerello Mascalese, 30% Nerello Cappuccio and 10% Nocera. You need to come up with a special food pairing for this wine, focusing on flavors that are a bit soft and sweet to contrast against the sharper qualities of this wine. A lamb tajine with stewed plums might do the trick.” 2021 – 2028

“The 2017 Faro is spicy and perfumed, the violet and rose tones giving way to peppery herbs, earthy minerals and musky black cherry. Its fleshy and enveloping textures are well balanced by zesty acids, as waves of tart wild berries and sour citrus wash across the palate, leaving a tactile mix of minerals and grippy tannins in their wake. This tapers off lightly structured and with a pretty inner sweetness, resonating on a vivid note of salted black licorice. The 2017 could use a few more months to a year to come fully into focus. Bonavita’s Faro is a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera that is refined for 24 months in a combination of 30-hectoliter oak barrels, cement and steel. In a word, spellbinding.” 2022 – 2028

The most important wine of the estate is the red Faro DOC – a blend of 60% Nerello Mascalese, 30% Nerello Cappuccio & 10% Nocera – with around 580 cases produced. After wild yeast ferment with skin contact of about 20 days the wine ages in large oak and concrete for 18 to 24 months dependent on the vintage..

The Faro DOC is located on Sicily’s northeastern tip overlooking the Strait of Messina. At only 34 hectares and with production of 4000 cases annually it is dwarfed even by Etna – 1100ha & 321,000 cases. Only 5 producers make wines here and the 3 plots of Bonavita that make up their 2.5 hectares are located on the vertiginous upper slopes of Faro Superiore. The steep terraces are between 250 and 300 masl surrounded by a wood of centuries-old oak and chestnut trees, forming a natural amphitheatre for their organic vines. Here, only the indigenous grapes are cultivated (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera). One of the main priorities is to protect the environment, thus they avoid the use of chemical substances, using only natural organic fertilizers and biodynamic preparations. The oldest vines are 80 years old and planted in Alberello style, the younger are 10 years old, trained to the espalier system The work here is manual and tough and production is low. The sandy, calcareous soils ensure the wines are stylistically different from those made on the neighbouring volcanic slopes of Etna, leaning towards more grace and elegance.

After returning to the family land from his studies in Bologna, Giovanni Scarfone started vinifying grapes from a few vines belonging to his father in a tiny room next to the family home. Fermentations now take place in stainless steel with wild yeasts in his newly created (yet still pretty tiny) winery just a few hundred metres from the vines’ terraces. Aging takes place in one large conical oak barrel along with some concrete, wines then being bottled unfiltered. His efforts produce around 1,000 cases each year and recognition of their excellence has rightly followed in the few years since his first vintage.
