Having learned her craft at Yering Station, Hardy's and the Rhône's legendary JL Chave, Caroline Mooney struck out on her own establishing Bird On A Wire in 2008. Her philosophy resonates with those wines to which she was exposed in her childhood. In her own words “it’s about expressing the pedigree of the single vineyards with which she works and the specificity of each season.”
Bird on a Wire Syrah 2015
14% abv
The cool year and long season has produced a wine that reflects the flinty/ hot-rock characters of the site and, the spicy, peppery and dark berry characters of the fruit.
The Syrah fruit is sourced from a vineyard in Yarra Glen, which is on an ENE slope optimising the warm sun but protecting fruit from Australia’s harsh afternoon summer sun. The soils are lean and gravelly which helps regulate vine vigour and crop load per vine.
Small crops result in intense flavours and the lean soils enhance the texture and savoury aspects of the fruit.
This wine is a testament to the superior site on which the Shiraz vines are planted. In what was a difficult growing season for Syrah this site with it’s sun catching aspect and steep gravelly soils allowed the fruit to withstand the high rainfall due to run off from the slope, and maximise sunlight hours. This in turn reduced the disease pressure being felt from less fortunate sites. The ripening process was slow but resulted in excellent flavour development at low baumé.
Oak treatment included 25% new. No Fining, no filtration.
