I Pentri takes its name from an ancient Samnite Tribe and is based in the Benevento province of Campania with 10 hectares of terraced vineyards on the hillsides of Monte Taburno. Husband-and-wife team Dionisio Meola and Lia Falato founded the winery in 2002 after 20 years experience of tending vines and the land in this area close to their hearts. Vineyards are tended and harvested by hand. No chemicals are used and natural biodynamic practices are followed with minimal interventions in the winery. Wines are fermented with wild yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
I Pentri Blu Astro Piedirosso 2011
13.5% abv
Dark ruby red colour, almost black, impenetrable. On the nose, aromas of violet, raspberry, fresh blackberry, black mulberry, plum, liquorice and tobacco. The varietal of Piedirosso grape is a vivid vein to the nose that immediately strikes you. A fresh, crisp, juicy, young, complex and fine profile. Silky tannins, infinite freshness. A wine that surprises for elegance and finesse of tones, for its soft and velvety movements. A wine of great balance and harmony but with a strong character and personality.
From the denomination IGP Benevento, made from 100% Piedirosso, a specialty of the region, largely used to produce wines for local and tourist consumption. Its name “piedirosso” means “red feet” that reflects the bottom of the vine which used to be red similar to the red feet of a pigeon.
Harvested by hand with each plant yields under 1kg. There are no fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides in the vineyard. Winemaking is spontaneous fermentation with maceration in stainless steel followed by fermentation in older oak. The wine then spends 1 year in French oak barrels, followed by 6 years in bottle. No clarification or fining on this wine. Production 698 bottles of 2011.
