Terre Des Dames La Dame Rouge 2020

14% abv

Vol- 75cl

A pure and intense red wine – gourmand, fresh, easy to drink. A typical Languedoc for its fruit and concentration. Atypical however for its freshness and soft tannins.

The wine is currenlty a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 20% Syrah. The Carignan is from 70 Year Old vines, the Grenache around 25 years old and the Syrah not far behind. Yields 32 hl/ha. As with all of the wines this is 100% harvested and selected by hand. Manual harvest and selection of the grapes – harvest only early in the morning; starting at 05.00h with headlamps which has helped improve the freshness of the red wines.

Vinification in Nomblot concrete tanks– two delestages the first days, followed by daily pump-overs. Over time, Lidewij appreciates more of a soft, natural way of winemaking. Due to the pureness after selection, she can allow a long period of skin contact, up to three, sometimes even four weeks. The wine is hardly pressed anymore, instead the squeeze of the pneumatic press is kept to a minimum, do a few rounds of draining and stop there. Everything to preserve the freshness of the wine and to avoid harsh tannins. Aging in concrete tanks for eighteen months, then blending and further aging in tank. No barrel ageing.

Lidewij van Wilgen, a successful marketing executive in The Netherlands, started a new life in 2002 when she moved with her 3 young daughters to become a winemaker in the Languedoc. The vineyards were restored, the wine cellar renovated and the main house rebuilt. Now she is one of the ‘Leading Ladies of Languedoc’ and is highly regarded by Jancis Robinson and many other wine writers. Certified organic principles are applied to both viticulture and vinification, her naturally irrigated 14-hectare vineyard being a mix of clay, limestone, flint and fossilized oyster shells.
