The Sebestyén winery was established in 1998 in the Szekszárd region, one of Hungary’s best winemaking areas thanks to its ideal climate and boasting a history dating back to Roman times. The family-run winery produces high quality wines following the highest production standards, strict yield limitation and selection of only the best grapes. They combine ancient traditions with modern technology and knowledge of which grapes thrive in the local terroir to offer a selection of wines from both national and international varieties. Our connection to the estate dates to Csilla Sebestyen’s time as Sommelier for Scotland’s only 2 star Michelin restaurant, Andrew Fairlie.
Sebestyen Kadarka 2019
11.5% abv
Kadarka is one the most ancient varieties of the famed Szekszárd region in the south of Hungary. These wines have played an undoubted role in the establishment of Hungarian red wine culture. Grapes are harvested partly from old vines giving elegance and minerality as well as from young vines giving refreshment. It is a light bodied wine with gentle tannins. Full of raspberries and cherries on the palate, violets and spices on the nose. It begs to be drunk!
Similar profile to Spatburgunder.
“From a brother-and-sister team, a very pale tomato red, light but pleasingly fruity, a little reminiscent of Pinot Noir. As is the structure, with its fruit, acidity and relatively low tannin. Very charming and distinctive. It should be drunk fairly young. It has real personality, even if no great persistence or longevity, I should imagine. A great choice to serve without food to those who refuse white wine.”
