The Slovenian region of Brda lies immediately to the east of Italy’s Collio region. The two denominations, in reality, comprise one contiguous quality wine zone whose terroir is rudely bisected by an international border. Today many winemakers and grapes cross the border in both directions in short journeys from vineyard to cellar. The Simcic family trace their wine making story in the region back to 1860. Their aim is to respect the historic traditions of the region in both viticulture and wine-making. The vineyards are farmed organically, yields are kept low and only natural yeasts are used. Marjan is one of the best young winemakers in Europe and has honed his knowledge of his land all his life and works to progress the quality of the wines tirelessly every year. The wines are divided into three distinct ranges. The Classic range is from the youngest vines (often up to 35 years old, however) and is made to provide wines for earlier release. Fermentation and aging takes place in stainless steel following 2 days of maceration, they then age for up to 8 months on the fine lees.
Marjan Simcic Sauvignon Vert Opoka 2018
14% abv
First release of a top selection of pure Sauvignon Vert. The wine shows a golden-yellow colour with a gentle greenish undertone. Perfectly timed harvest captures the healthiness and phenolic ripeness of the grapes, giving the wine an elegant vibrant body next to its mineral freshness, rich yet not overwhelming herbal accents and a lasting finish. With air this develops subtle hints of dry herbs, dry field flowers and ripe green apple. The palate boasts a refined elegance underscored by a pleasant minerality, with a characteristically gentle lingering finish of ripe almonds
From an 89 year old vineyard in Zegla. Wild yeast ferment in contact with skins for 2 days in conical oak barrels (tono) 2,500 l. Aged for 23 months in conical oak barrels. Sauvignon Vert hails from France, it was brought to the regions of northern Italy and the Brda with mentions already in 1600. Since the variety thrives exceedingly well in local conditions, bearing remarkable results, the locals (Friulians) in time simply adopted it as indigenous, and the Italian side of the land now calls it Friulano.Opoka is the local term for the marl mineral soil of the area. These wines are only made in the best vintages and are the product of a strict selection and represent the best of the best. Only vines identified as growing on the Opoka soil during extensive core samples throughout all the estate’s vineyards are elligible for selection.
